Thank you so very much for posting this information. I fear going to work everyday because I never know if I am going to get yelled at or made to feel small. I have physical problems that I never thought were necessary to get documentation for because it does not interfere with my work aside from an occasional bathroom visit. I got yelled at for not telling my boss I was going to the bathroom because I could not find her and had to go immediately. I did tell another co-worker. I get physically ill before I go into work because of the amount of anxiety this woman causes me. She had me in tears today and I really don't think I can mentally handle going in tomorrow to deal with her. (Also, the suggestion of saying you are going to be sick won't deter her, she will follow you to the bathroom and wait.)

I once was VP, Marketing for a UK firm. I was rendered impotent as owner gave all the marketing duties to his wife. (Who had zero marketing knowledge.) Then I learned that he managed by intimidation - even if you were 150% of quota, he threatened you with dismissal.

I left and a lot of others did too.

My view is that it is generally not wise to "open your heart" to a superior, because she or he then has something of a burden to keep your secrets. However, if you have an "inner voice" that you can trust in this long-term colleague, do so. You need a reference letter, and you seem to have little to lose. Good Luck.

I'm in an extremely hostile, toxic and dysfunctional work place. There is no one to go to...the owner is impossible to work with, and the office manager plays employees against each other. Other employees feel the same. I trust one senior manager who I have worked with for five years. He has offered to write me a reference letter. We are all shocked at the abuse. Do you think it is OK for me to confide in this senior manager? Thank you for your time!!

This has been extremely helpful and has supported my need to find a better working environment.
I am in a no win situation and thank you for this sharing of wisdom that has propelled me to move forward without regret.
All of the ideas are so well advised, again thanks.

has thought of someone he can blame it on."

This quote really somes things up quite nicely and so appropriately for the boss who is never wrong, but everyone around him (me specifically) is.
