Employer Hall of “Fame or Shame”

We are pleased to Announce a New Inductee into SkloverWorkingWisdom’s…
Employer Hall of
“Fame or Shame”
North Shore / LIJ Health System
Every now and then we read or hear of an outstanding example of an Employer acting in a positive, praise-worthy manner, or, sometimes, in a punitive, shame-worthy manner.
Just like employees: they come in both varieties.
Recently when someone very dear to the SkloverWorkingWisdom Family became very ill, we learned that her Employer engages in a very caring and humane employment practice:
Under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”) law, an employee is permitted 12 weeks of unpaid leave in order to help him/her self, or a loved one, recover from an illness. And then the employee is guaranteed his or her job back upon return to work.
The North Shore / LIJ Health System in New York goes much further: for those with serious illnesses – like our dear friend – they are permitted six months of unpaid leave not just 12 weeks. Then, the employee is not guaranteed the exact same job back, but some job reasonably similar. What good does that do?
First, it enables the continuation of health care coverage at the subsidized employee rate, which can be crucial to a very ill person.
Second, it offers hope to that very ill person, which is in our view the best
medicine in the entire world, regardless of the illness in question.
Third, it is an act of compassion, a symbol of sympathy, an acknowledgement of humanity, when those things are especially needed.
North Shore / LIJ Health System: You make us all proud, and you deserve great thanks and appreciation for this wonderful, helpful policy.
You inspire!! Hat’s off to you!! We hope more employers act as you do!! Please don’t stop.
