I work with employers and displaced job seekers and benefits such as severance, letters of recommendation are still viable options. A 6-month severance for a blue collar or hourly position would not be probable except for maybe a week or two of pay, however, in management or white collar positions, &quot;parting gifts&quot; may be more generous. 

It all depends on your personal relationship with the employer, the management style of the company and other factors.  To paint a broad brush to say that &quot;companies don&#039;t give severance packages anymore&quot; is not a fair statement.</description>

		<description>Alan - this is very insightful, although I felt much of what you said about negotiating is not entirely realistic for most people today.  Maybe at one time it would have been, but not for today.  

For example, no company I know of would keep an employee on for 6 months knowing they are looking for a job.  Companies don&#039;t give severance today anymore, maybe 2 weeks tops.  And it&#039;s unrealistic for an employer to sign a reference letter if they want you to leave.  However, I do believe that negotiation of some sort would be the only way to go in this situation</description>
