In navigating and negotiating for yourself at work, consider a concept called “platform negotiating.” Its essential point is described in the quote above. If you can’t get a raise now, perhaps you can consider seeking a better-sounding title, less travel, working from home one day a week, or appointment to a critical committee, none of which costs a dollar, but each of which may be “priceless” to you. Each is a step forward, and can build a “platform” from which you may later request that raise, promotion, bonus, or whatever is on your “big-goal” list. Step by step, inch by inch, forward, forward, forward . . .
