Sklover’s Thought for the Work Week

“Enough is a feast.”

– Buddhist Proverb

In this “never enough” world in which we live, this proverb surely offers a refreshingly different perspective. In the investment world, this year’s profits not exceeding last year’s profits is often viewed as an abject failure. At work, it often seems that no matter how many hours you devote, or how much you get done, it is never enough. The pressure to do more, to make more, and to possess more can never be satisfied when “enough is never enough.” My experience with clients’ work hours indicates that it is just getting out of hand.

At work, do all you do with foresight, with care, and with the reasonable needs of others in mind. But bear in mind, too, that loss of work-life balance, loss of warm and close relations, and even loss of health, are losses that no job is worth. If doing all you can do is never enough, well, this might not be the job for you. Yes, I know, it is not easy to find a new job, but that is far, far easier than repairing a life.

As this proverb suggests, to have what you and your loved ones need, now and in the foreseeable future, can be viewed as a feast, a true triumph over the uncertainties of life, and the precious balance that even nature aims for. Keep in mind that you may not have all of the things your neighbor does, but what you have may be viewed as a feast enjoyed by only a fortunate few, and to be safeguarded as the precious jewels that they are.
