“You cannot negotiate with a tiger while your head is in its mouth.”
– Winston Churchill
Negotiation is very situational, that is, its success or failure depends to a considerable degree upon the relative position of the parties. As a very prime example, are you the very best in your field, with knowledge, skills and relations that every employer wants? That makes your negotiations with your employer pretty easy. On the other hand, if your knowledge, skills and relations are common and not very valuable to your employer, negotiation is a lot harder. So, figure out, seek and develop what your employer and all other employers in your industry want and need, and you will be the tiger with their heads in your mouth.
