“You can’t be what you can’t see.”

– Marian Wright Edelman

This quote is a keen observation of the fact that your vision for yourself, to a degree, may be limited by your experiences, if you permit that to happen. As an example, if no one in your family ever worked as a police officer, it is less likely that you will do so. The same works in reverse: if all of your family were police officers, it is far more likely that you will be one, too. When presented with a career opportunity that is outside of your experience and that of your family, bear that in mind. Consider seeking out people who have “been there, and done that” to take advantage of their familiarity with what might await you. And, too, give yourself an extra dose of self-confidence by assuring yourself, “I am going to consider this, no matter my unfamiliarity with it. I deserve no less.”
