“You never change anything by fighting the existing. To change something, build a new model and make the existing obsolete.”
– Buckminster Fuller

At work, as elsewhere, when faced with new and significant challenges, the surest road to success is built by identifying and incorporating new and better ways to live, work and engage with your colleagues and customers. You cannot fight new challenges as much as you can “out-challenge” them. As a master “imagineer” and innovator, Buckminster Fuller looked to nature for inspiration. Just as did Charles Darwin, he understood that the most successful species were not the strongest, or the largest, but the most adaptive, meaning those who “readily incorporated into themselves what is positive for themselves.” He appreciated that the “new” replaced the “old” only when the “new” became more supportive, protective and benevolent, and nourishing to the environment around it. That is how nature adapts, not so much as by battle as by relevance. Look for better ways, and adopt them. That’s what gives rise to the most meaningful and long-term of successes; those are what’s needed in times of significant challenge.
We thank Lester W. of Sumter, South Carolina, for this very interesting thought. He adds that Florence is called the “Magic City” for its amazing growth, charm and beauty. Hat’s off to you, Lester, and to Sumter, too.
