Next steps hard to focus on right now? Too much at work seem too fluid to permit you to create a personal plan? Seem like you are “running in place?” If so, know that you’ve got a lot of company in others out there. One way to lift yourself out of this kind of “neutral gear” recommended by many professionals and coaches is to set just one or two very general goals, and take one or two small steps each week toward each goal. As examples, consider “Improve My Health,” “Develop a New Skill,” or “Contact More Friends.” Then take one small step each week toward each general goal. You will begin to see yourself “moving forward” (even if in only small steps), less “stuck in place,” and motivated to do so in other respects. So, even a general goal is (1) reminding yourself what’s good for you, (2) good to help you get up and going, and (3) good to “clear your clouds” and inspire yourself to move onto even greater goals. Before you know it, you’ll be back in your “groove.”
