I attended law school, passed the bar exam, and have been an attorney for almost 40 years. I have profound respect for the law and our Courts. Profound is an understatement, for it is the law that can provide us with the dignity of equal and fair treatment. However, as an employment attorney I know this: if you sue your employer or former employer, it will be on the internet in a matter of minutes, maybe less, and very few employers will then take a chance on hiring you. If you get divorced, no one looks badly on you if the matter goes to Court. If you are involved in a car accident, no one things less of you. But if you sue an employer . . . it may severely reduce your chances of being hired again. Fair? No. Reality? Yes. What can you do? Become a better “Navigator and Negotiator” in your work and career. And you can always sue after you’ve tried negotiation. That’s what we’ve been “teaching and preaching” for decades now, and it’s truer than ever. Learn as an oak tree grows: slowly and surely, and it’s never too late. And, it’s good for you, too. Self-reliance is self-confidence is self-advancement. That’s what we are all about.
Diane B. of Huntington, New York recently reminded me that I shared this quote with her many years ago during a softball game when a spectator yelled, “Sue the Ump.” I told her that wouldn’t be helpful, and shared this quote. Thanks for the reminder, Diane.
