“So often in life, things that you regard as an impediment turn out to be great, good fortune.”

– Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Wise words to live by from a woman who was physically small, the only female member of her law school class, who could not get a job in a large law firm, who was a mom when she worked full-time to support her family as her husband attended graduate school, and yet as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, she reached the pinnacles of worldwide respect, influence and admiration of so, so many. “Notorious RBG,” as she came to be known, surely understood that her success was not prevented by her many challenges, but perhaps, instead, a result of them. She was able to understand so many viewpoints, she came to enjoy rising to challenges before her, and she came to be a true “striver” as a result. And, too, although considered a leading liberal on the High Court, she was also a very close friend of the High Court’s most conservative member. So, too, can you and I do the same, at work and elsewhere, provided we bear in mind that our seeming disadvantages may, in actuality, be our truly greatest blessings.

This quote was contributed by D.T., a law school professor from Philadelphia, who is in the midst of writing a book on the life of Ruth Bader Ginsberg. She shares that “Notorious RBG” was a hero to her as she grew up, and a good part of the reason she attended law school. Thank you, Professor.
