“They laugh at me because I’m different. I laugh at them because they are all the same.”

At work, perhaps more than anywhere else, there is something of an unspoken expectation that you will be, act and look like others. But more than I can remember, there is also today a growing acceptance, indeed an appreciation, that “who” you are is up to you, and that “how” you are with others is what should matter to others. Cooperative? Supportive? Respectful? Hard working? Alternatively, Dismissive? Humiliating? Bullying? Argumentative? Perhaps it’s a generational change. Perhaps we’re all just growing up a bit. What really matters is to remember that “outstanding” people are just the ones who choose to “stand out.” What gets you closer to your own success is to recognize the value of those among us, no matter how different, and disregard the rather meaningless differences between us. There’s no need to laugh at anyone, but instead to laugh with everyone who has a sense of humor. In all you do, be your best; don’t worry about being like the rest.
This quote was contributed by Marjorie P. of Smyrna, Delaware, a Registered Nurse, who shared with us that she found her “best job ever” because of the quality of the people she is now working with. She also shares that she is a “grunge music” fanatic, and fan of the late Kurt Cobain. Go get ‘em, Marjorie!
