“One’s dignity may be assaulted, vandalized, or cruelly mocked, but it can never be taken away unless it is surrendered.”

Defending your dignity from the corrosive effects of humiliation or degradation is surely a demanding and tortuous task. Some might say it is the most challenging task in life. Whether the humiliation that threatens your dignity comes from a loss of employment, the ravages of age, the specter of family dissolution, perhaps losing control of bodily functions, or otherwise, the defense is essentially the same: a resolute “You may affect my body, and you may get a grip on my mind, but you’ll never take control of my soul.” Though close ones may help, it remains a solo task like no other. And it requires, too, that you never blame others for the weighty task you face, as to do so would be a distraction, and a loss of dignity akin to its surrender.
