“If it can be broken, it can be repaired.”

– Talmudic Principle

Into every life there sometimes comes the sense that things are “broken.” It could be a seemingly “broken” personal relation, an “empty” or “lost” job, perhaps “broken” health. Perhaps even two or three “broken’s” at once. Working with employees, some dealing with feared or actual job loss, that sense of “broken-ness” often comes up. When it does, I find that sharing this principle is often very helpful. It is something of a sharing of faith. I’ve seen firsthand that when reminded of this principle, clients share, in their own words, new thoughts of renewal, strength and hope. It is a reminder of the possibility that if “repair” is possible, there is hope. Knowing that something “can happen” means that, if positive purpose is pursued, it is more likely that it “will happen.” It’s important to remind yourself, every once in a while, especially in a seemingly fractured world, that “If it can be broken, it can be repaired.” It is a wonderfully simple notion, yet it can be miraculously inspirational, too, and especially when it is sorely needed. Give it a try. Just say it to yourself, two or three times. “If it can be broken, it can be repaired.” It will just take a moment.

This quote recently came to mind when I was counseling a highly successful executive whose life had become significantly unsettled regarding both her career and her health. She wrote me a few days ago just these four simple words: “Thanks. I needed that.” Those were the exact same four simple words that I then wrote back to her.
