In recent months, I’ve spoken with many friends and clients about “pivoting” what they do for a living. Whatever they dream about doing – perhaps starting a new career, or building their own business, or returning to grad school to get a new credential or degree – it takes heart, guts and courage. To start something new inevitably entails time away from what you find enjoyable, diversion of needed financial resources, maybe even putting off buying a new home or having another child. Advancement entails sacrifice, there’s no two ways about it.

But if you are considering a “pivot,” it’s not sacrifice you should focus on. Rather, you would be wiser to view the requisite temporary sacrifice for what it really is: a “test of the soul,” and an exercise of your “latent self-discipline.” A first step can feel clumsy, but it’s really a step on the path to more affirming and meaningful life. Your taking that step will certainly become a source of self-congratulation, and a precursor to greater self-confidence. It is true: one of the hardest things in life is to be a beginner. But taking that first step, and staying on the new path, is also one of the best things you will ever do for finding, creating and building your new and better self.
