In every context I can think of, this quote is sheer insight. I’ve worked with so many clients in navigating their careers, through both “good times” and “bad times,” too. I’ve worked with clients going through work transition, job loss, career change, some while also facing divorce, grave illness, even loss of a loved one. In almost every situation, I ask the same question: “What’s your goal, and why?” Those who respond easily, with little hesitation, are those who are sure to be more successful in addressing what’s in front to them. In good part, it’s because they are not distracted by momentary emotions. They see before them – and maintain focus on – the “larger picture,” what’s most important to them, their values, and what and who they care about most. It’s grounding. It’s inspiring. It’s motivating. It’s just like preventing seasickness in rough seas by focusing on the horizon. And so very simple. What are your primary goals . . . Achieving financial security? Maintaining close relations? Finding purpose and meaning in your daily life? Look at what you do, and how you do it, and your goals will become quite clear to you. Knowing what they are, and why you seek them, is unquestionably the best way to achieve them.

This insightful quote arrived on our doorstep last week from a dear friend, Elaine C., from all the way back to high school. Elaine, this quote reminds me of you, and your inner – and outer – peace. My thanks go out to you.
