“Chance favors only the prepared mind.”

At work, at home and elsewhere, without plan or intention, have you ever in your mind “connected the dots” or “put the pieces of a puzzle together” and arrived at a fascinating insight or simple solution? Many great discoveries and creative inventions have been born that way, by apparent accident, mere chance, at times even by error. The “prepared mind” is having at the ready an inclination to ask yourself, “I wonder why that happened?” and then simply “connecting the dots” to the answer.

Do you know how the microwave oven was accidentally invented? In 1945 a radar engineer for the U.S. Defense Department noticed that, while he was working in his lab, a chocolate bar in his pocket had melted. He wondered why, and then put some popcorn kernels near his worktable; sure enough, they popped. Then he tried an egg, and – you guessed it – it fried. From that rather humble experience came about a new invention – the microwave oven – that is now in nearly every kitchen in the world. Responding to a chance event, the engineer simply said to himself, “I wonder why that happened.” And then, he just connected the dots. The rest is “cooking history.”

Be prepared to ask that question, assemble the dots in front of you, and ponder those puzzle pieces. With a “prepared mind” you are prepared for that “chance happening,” that “unexpected mistake” or that “funny failure” that is all you will need to achieve the greatest success of your life.
