“When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotion.”

In my view, this thought rises above mere observation all the way to the level of pure insight into interpersonal relations. Whether at work, home or at play, it is so, so helpful – often critical – to bear in mind that, with few exceptions, people are primarily emotional beings, but we continually try to “overlay” our feelings with rational thoughts, logical constructs, and reasoned bases for our actions. How often do you think, “Why in the world would he or she do THAT?!?” It is so often the case that the person you are thinking about does not, himself or herself, have a clue. Instead they are following their feelings . . . of mistrust, fear, greed, anger, or another emotion that has, at least for the moment, seized control of them and their actions. It is very often I tell clients, “You are being so rational, you are not being logical . . . logical people know that people are both rational and irrational; you are examining only the rational side of people, and that is rarely their controlling side.” Give it a bit of thought . . . it is bound to help you.
