“Why did I choose to study the universe? I would say the universe chose me.”

At any age, career-path issues can arise. “Is this the job or activity I want to devote almost all my time and energy to? Is there something else that might provide me with greater reward, purpose, excitement or engagement?” Issues like these can arise as early as high school, or even during retirement. Sometimes it’s voluntary, and sometimes it’s not – like when you are laid off due to your industry retrenching.
No matter when or why a workplace transition is in your cards, I am a big believer in people “pursuing what seems to pursue them” by trying different things and while doing so observing what catches their interest and fascination. (It’s sort of like dating before marriage.) Not all will identify and secure a role or position that thrills them, but so long as you’re willing to try new and different ventures, the greater the chance you’ll eventually “ring that bell.”
And while it’s never easy to be a “beginner again,” no matter your age, it’s a waste of your potential, and a shame, not to give pursuit to what “pursues” you. While you may not achieve nirvana or find your career “sweet spot,” you will unquestionably be so much more likely to do so if you have the courage to at least give it a try. And if you don’t try, you’ll never know… Remember that the universe reached out and touched Neil deGrasse Tyson.
I came upon this quote when watching Dr. Tyson being interviewed on a podcast. He is so very intelligent, thoughtful and enjoyable to watch and listen to. He is also the Director of the world-famous Hayden Planetarium in New York where, as a kid from the Bronx, he first experienced his own fascination with the Cosmos. Thank you, Dr. Tyson!!
