The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”

A good friend of mine, now in her later years, recently underwent a new form of eye surgery to correct a problem she had no choice but to live with for the past 70 years. Her report of the improvements this has made in her life have been quite interesting.

Yes, the increasing fog that gradually blocked out so much of the sun in her life is now lifting. Surprisingly, though, she reports that she is also feeling a heightened sense of the “world” around her, and her purpose within it. Better eyesight, sure . . . but clearer purpose, too?

She explains this by her observation that, as examples, she never knew how “luxuriously red” and “beautifully green” are the traffic signal lights at the street intersections where she lives. She has asked me, more than once, “Do other people know and appreciate that?” Those lights not only regulate traffic, but in her view also add a touch of joy for their beauty.

In longer and softer conversations, she has shared that she now more deeply understands something she and I have discussed in recent months: It’s near impossible to feel gratitude and depression at the same time. Just as hope dissipates fear, so too does the “sunshine” of appreciation burn off the “fog” of disillusionment.

Her improved eyesight has given my friend a greater vision of how very much we have, and have to share, and are obliged to pass around to others each and every day, both for our own sake and for the welfare of our friends and loved ones, too.

Interesting, isn’t it? I guess that’s why they call it “in-sight.”

This quote was suggested by Ludwig, a blog-family member, good friend and walking buddy, with whom I have shared my friend’s “in – sight.” Thanks, Ludwig. Great suggestion. Super appreciated.
