“When I was young, my teachers were the old. Now that I am old, my teachers are the young.”
– Robert Frost
Last week, I hosted a lunch for a group of friends and family. I had the good fortune to be seated next to a six-year-old boy. The adult conversation was quite thoughtful, interesting, and at times fascinating. My conversation with my six-year-old tablemate, however, was at a different level . . . at times absorbing, gripping, even riveting. The topics he and I shared – spiders, the clouds and why shoes are silly – have dwelled in my mind on-and-off since then. And, too, just prior to going home, he heartily hugged each person in the room without hesitation, with nearly all his might. The time with him was just great. I learned so much. I wonder what it would be like if, next year, I had an entire roomful of guests of that age. Yes, come to think of it, shoes are a bit silly, aren’t they?
