“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”
– Winston Churchill
Well said, Winston! At work, as elsewhere, difficulties and conflicts inevitably arise, and often when and where you least expect it. Wise people resolve them, and don’t inflame them, as that only creates greater risk of greater harm to a greater number of people. I always counsel clients “Honey first, then vinegar; once you serve vinegar, you can’t easily go back to honey.” Listen carefully to others’ concerns and upset, and listen, too, “between their words.” There lies the solution to the problem, and solutions serve everyone best. They really do. And nowhere is that more true than at work and in career. Knowing how to solve problems is an outstanding career asset, now more than ever before.
