Sklover’s Thoughts for the Work Week

“We all need to learn how to speak American.”

– Brian Williams

Yes, we do. At work, and elsewhere, we all need to learn to speak simply, converse with diverse people, without the “jargon” and outside the usual words of your particular job, industry, profession or neighborhood. And, don’t worry about your accent or hesitate to interact with different kinds from different places, who believe in different things. Just like with music: whether it’s rap, rhapsody, rock, reggae or rhythm and blues, it’s American. Food, too: whether it’s pizza, pumpkin pie, or potato knish, it’s American. Learn how to speak “American” that simple, direct and optimistic language. The more you do, the more you will discover the common beauty among us that you may never have known was there. Learn to speak “American.” It’s a super language.

I heard this said on TV a few days ago, and its “danced in my head” since then. I like it a lot. Our thanks to you, Brian Williams.
