“Social Distancing is Misnamed. It should be named Physical Distancing.”
– Al Sklover
It is very, very important that we each remain at home, to the extent we can do so, in order to reduce and, hopefully eliminate, the virus illness affecting the world right now. But social interactions are among the sweetest parts of life.
One aspect of “social distancing” is the effect it is likely to have on our emotional health, and thus our physical health, as well. Keep in mind that it is more important than ever before to (a) practice “Physical Distancing,” (b) BUT, at the same time, to increase your “non-physical, social interactions,” that is, your “safe communications,” and your “safely being there” for others, and letting others “safely be there” for you.
Family, friends, colleagues, customers, and especially the aged and others who are likely feeling the sadness of isolation, are all longing to say to you “Thanks for calling,” “Thanks for emailing,” “Good to hear your voice,” or “Good to see you on this video chat.”
Now is the time – like never before – to mindfully make a list of people in your life – including your worklife – with whom you should maintain, no, increase, your “safe touching” from a distance. Even a brief “Hope you and your family are well” in this stressful time will be a warm and welcome message that will never be forgotten.
It will be good for them, good for you, and good for us all. We hope and pray that this message, too, is of assistance to you in this very difficult time, and of assistance, too, to all of those in your life. We are far apart, yet we are all “in this together.”
This quote is something I thought of late last night. I hope you make your list of people to send your kind regards to today, and use it each day, until the “sunshine” returns to our lives.
