Sklover’s Thoughts for the Work Week

Sklover’s Thoughts for the Work Week

“Doubt is an uncomfortable condition, but certainty is a ridiculous one.”

– Voltaire

So much in our lives seems to be “up in the air.” So much seems unsettled, if not unsettling. There’s a lot that needs to be resolved before we can come to understand, and possibly even enjoy, the “new normal.” But doubt, uncertainty and insecurity, while uncomfortable and even at times unhealthy, needs to be understood in the larger context of life: uncertainty is, by its nature, the usual state of being for most of the world’s population, for thousands of years, most of whom live lives day in and day out that are purely precarious, full of doubt, unexpected events, and calamities beyond control. Our ancestors would marvel at how “secure” we need to be to get through each day.

Don’t be intimidated or immobilized by doubt; instead, try dogged determination. Don’t fret; instead, have faith. Don’t go out on limbs pursuing unnecessary comforts; instead, try staying closer to the simple life, near the “trunk of the tree,” that is, your highest values, where true security is available on a daily basis. And don’t forget: uncertainty may be a precursor for change, including systemic change that has been long, long delayed. Like an unsettling earthquake, “shaking things up” may be necessary for “shaking things out,” that is, true, long lasting and needed change that is surely not to be feared.
