“Respect science. Respect nature. Respect each other. That is all we need to do.”
– Tom Friedman
How might we overcome the growing worldwide crisis of the Covid-19 virus? So often our most difficult questions require only the simplest answers. And the simplest answers arise out of our basic values. Like a compass, a review of our values always points us to the answers we seek, like the joy of light in the dread of dark times.
Respect is a basic, simple, foundational value. It is exhibiting due regard for someone or something else. It is giving honor to another you hold in esteem. Science deserves respect for its objectivity. Nature deserves respect for its immense power. We each deserve respect, unless, that is, we act in a way that shows we do not.
“Respect science. Respect nature. Respect each other. That’s all we need to do.”
This quote, by author and columnist Tom Friedman, reminds us of what Leonardo da Vinci said: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Give it some thought. Then again, it doesn’t require much thought, does it? Just respect.
