“Inhale the future, exhale the past.”
Breathing . . . it’s something that most of us aren’t used to thinking about. It just, well, sort of happens. I learned a long time ago – in my youth – how useful, how important, and how advantageous it is to breathe intentionally, with long and strong “ins” and long and strong “outs.” It calmed me as it energized me, it relaxed me as it emboldened me, it clarified me as it relaxed me. Now, many years later, I read more and more how healthy it is, as well. In times of stress, anxiety and insecurity – and that sort of describes these times, does it not? – intentional, “long and strong” breathing can help you cope, hope and stay away from the sense of “nope.”
Inhale, and you bring oxygen, and hope, into your future. Exhale, and let go of the unneeded air, and you get rid of the past. The more future, the more hope, and the happier is each and every cell in your body. I kid you not.
Whether it’s just sitting on the front steps with your dog, or waiting on a subway platform, or in a tense Zoom meeting, don’t hesitate to thoughtfully breathe, with long and strong breaths in, and long and strong breaths out. It will help you focus on the good, and get to sleep, stay asleep, and arise from sleep, too. And I know of no other way to stay away from the drama and the “dramatists” around us. Give it a try . . . I think you’ll enjoy it. I really do.
I found this quote on a coffee mug and saved it for when I got the feeling to use it. Today, while deep breathing, I got that feeling.
