Request for “Tax Gross Up” for Reimbursed Relocation, Education, Travel or other Workplace Expense
If your employer requests that you incur an expense related to your work, with the assurance that you will be reimbursed for it, that reimbursement might just be treated as income, and you might have to pay tax on all of it, or part of it. Ouch!
This result is often required by federal tax law, and at other times by IRS regulations. Your employer, though can if it wishes also reimburse you for this unexpected tax burden. But it isn’t likely to do so unless you first make the request.
This Model Memo, like all of our Model Memos and Letters, shows you “What to Say, And How to Say It,”™
Using clear, simple language, it addresses the essential points, in an organized, effective fashion. It is an effective tool to save yourself perhaps thousands of dollars at a rather modest cost.
